Angelina Jolie Being In Ukraine Has Divided Opinion

The 46-year-old star was spotted in a cafe in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv

Angelina Jolie has been spotted in Ukraine as Russia continues its attack on the country, with her visit dividing opinion online.

The Maleficent actor is well known for her humanitarian work, and continually uses her following to promote charitable causes and fight for justice across the world.

Today (30 April), a video was shared by the Kyiv Independent appearing to show the 46-year-old star in a cafe in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.

The publication wrote on Twitter: “Actress and filmmaker Angelina Jolie was spotted at a cafe in western Ukrainian city of Lviv on April 30.

“Jolie is a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.”

The original clip was uploaded by Facebook user Maya Pidhorodetska, who added: “Nothing special. Just Lviv. I just went to have coffee. Just Angelina Jolie.

“Ukraine is simply supported by the whole world.”

Jolie was seen greeting fans in the city just as Russia renewed its attack in the east of the country.

Although it’s not clear why the Hollywood actor is there, many people have commented on her visit – some praising the star and others lambasting her.

And that includes controversial TV host Piers Morgan, who has unsurprisingly taken a rather critical approach.

Sharing a screenshot of the news that Jolie had arrived in Ukraine, he wrote: “Oh jeez, haven’t they suffered enough?”

In response to his tweet, one woman said: “Well she’s been out of the headlines for a while now. Just call me cynical.”

However, not everyone agreed with this viewpoint, with one saying: "brave and lovely support."

With another commenter stating: “She was just in a couple movies. People don't go to war zones for the publicity. She could made a statement from home.”

A second said: “I don't generally care for celebrities, but I'm glad she's doing good work there.”

Others criticised Piers for his consistent attack on female celebrities, including a commenter who shared a screenshot of the definition of ‘misogyny’ alongside the caption: “Surprise, surprise - here we go again.”

It is currently unknown how long Jolie will be in Ukraine and what she will be doing while there, but the actress has previously spoken out in support of the country in an Instagram post.
