Jennifer Lawrence has spoken about her relationship with Darren Aronofsky, admitting it was 'unhealthy' to be dating the director of a movie she was starring in.

Back in 2017, Lawrence starred in the psychological horror Mother! which was written and directed by Aronofsky.

The film focused on Lawrence as an unnamed mother whose home was invaded by strangers - but it was left with mixed reviews from viewers and critics who found it overly disturbing and a little confusing.

Speaking about the movie, Lawrence has since admitted she also found it confusing, but explained it helped that she was dating the director.

Appearing on an episode of Watch What Happens Live, Lawrence was asked by host Andy Cohen: "On a scale of one to totally confused, how much did you understand your film Mother!?"

"I'm going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had the CliffNotes. So, five. Or four?" she responded.

Cohen was shocked: "Four?! Wow okay, that's not high."

"But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!" Lawrence added.

When Cohen joked back, "F*** the director?," Lawrence replied: "Yeah!"

Also talking to Adam Sandler for one of Variety's Actors to Actors interviews, Lawrence admitted she realised it wasn't healthy when the pair began reading reviews of the movie together.

"Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just out of your hands," she said.

"I normally just kind of let it go. Dating the director was different. We’d be on the [press] tour together, I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.

"He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about and I get it. It’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it.

"I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner, while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?’

"I finally was just like, ‘It’s not healthy. Neither of us are doing it because if I read it, I start getting defensive.’ Especially because it’s my man."

Lawrence added: "It’s awesome, what we did — some people hate it and the people who hate it, really hate it.

"But it’s nothing that needs to be defended and if I read a negative review, I just feel defensive."

The actor is now married to Cooke Maroney with the pair currently expecting their second child.
