Kanye West has challenged Kim Kardashian's request to be legally single by saying she must first meet three conditions.
Kardashian, who shares four children with West, asked California judges to make her 'legally single' in December 2021 following her split from West earlier in the year.
The move indicates that Kardashian wanted their divorce to be split into two parts, one of which would allow her to default to her maiden name and single status, while the other would look into assets and child custody.

West responded to the request through his lawyers last week, according to court documents obtained by People, and argued that granting single status before settling issues of child custody and shared property could result in 'a risk of adverse consequences'.
It further claimed, 'If status is terminated now without his condition, then a barrier to obtaining evidence regarding parenting and custody will arise if Kim remarries before the case is concluded.'
In order for Kardashian to have her request met, West laid out several 'conditions' in his response, one of which is 'right of reimbursement', which means Kardashian or West would be reimbursed money owed if 'either party dies'.

The second condition relates to the transfer of assets, with West demanding that Kardashian not move assets from their trust before the terms of their property are decided. According to The Independent, Kardashian has argued that this condition isn't necessary as their prenuptial agreement kept all of their assets separate anyway.
The final condition is that reality TV star must forfeit her marital privilege with West and any potential future spouse until their dispute is resolved. Martial privilege allows spouses to conceal conversations between them, and prevents spouses from testifying or serving as witnesses against each other.
A hearing on Kardashian's petition is currently set for early March, but after she reportedly 'rejected' West's requests his lawyers have said, 'Kim's motion should be denied without prejudice so that Kim can refile it with the mandatory corrections and requested conditions.'

Nancy Chemtob, a New York City family law attorney, told Insider that Kardashian's request to be legally single is 'basically saying, '[Kanye West] is never moving forward to get divorced, and so let me move on'.'
In her documents filed in December, Kardashian claimed West had ignored her requests to 'terminate [their] martial status' since she had filed for divorce.
