Madonna has taken back her icon status and caused outrage amongst Christians by recreating scenes of The Last Supper.
For Vanity Fair’s new ‘Icon Issue’, the legendary singer transformed into the Virgin Mary and donned a sword-pierced heart outside her chest with gold embroidery.
The magazine also saw the 64-year-old recreate scenes from The Last Supper, stepping into the role of Jesus standing on a lavish spread as her loyal followers fall at her feet.

“In this very special issue, Madonna becomes Madonna again: an icon. Not just the embodiment of a musical trend or a style of dress, but a figure as disturbing as she is sacred,” Olivier Bouchara, Head of Editorial Content for Vanity Fair France, said in a press release, as per Page Six.
The issue that celebrates idols who ‘contributed to shape the modern culture’, will be distributed in Spain, Italy and France.
According to Billboard, the ‘Hung Up’ singer was dressed for the shoot in designs by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and styled by her longtime collaborator, B. Åkerlund.

An impressive feat to step into the role of such historical figures; however, according to Galliano, Madge’s career has always had a ‘biblical dimension’ and ‘universal scope’.
Something that has been a constant.
He told Vanity Fair, as per Billboard: “The first time I saw her, she was already inspired, fearless, with integrity and artistic pride.”
However, the issue has sparked outrage from the Christian community, as one person wrote: “She goin ta hell.”

The spread comes after the singer announced she would embark on a massive tour to celebrate her 40th anniversary as the Queen of Pop.
Organizers said the 'Madonna: The Celebration Tour' will highlight her ‘unmatched’ catalog of music over four decades while paying homage to the city of New York, where her music career began.
"I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for," the pop icon said in a statement, as per Reuters.
The tour will travel to 35 cities, kicking off in Vancouver on July 15.
