Some people think Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey are actually the same person

There are people who look alike, and then there's Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey.

The actors share such a strong resemblance, they look like they could be twins.

Despite their similarities, there are enough differences to tell the pair apart – and then there's the fact they're set to star in a movie together.

But on some corners of the internet, a conspiracy theory continues to argue that they are, in fact, the same person.

In Robbie's latest flick Amsterdam she even spoke French, which only fuelled the idea as Mackey herself is from France.

So, what does Robbie have to say about the whole thing? See for yourself:

IGV Presents decided to ask about the conspiracy theory while speaking to her on the red carpet.

After bursting into laughter, Robbie gracefully tells the reporter: "Her French is far better than mine.

"That will put the conspiracy to rest immediately."

She went on to further compliment the Sex Education star, adding: "She also speaks Spanish, and she also has an amazing singing voice.

"And I cannot speak Spanish, I'm not fluent in French and I don't have an amazing singing voice as you will also find out in this movie."

It's refreshing to see a celebrity being so modest.

And Mackey has only good things to say about her 32-year-old doppelgänger too – although she does wish the comparisons would stop.

Speaking to Total Film in September, the 26-year-old star said: "It's just a joke in real life. I'm like, 'We don't look anything like each other.'

"I don't mind it. It's Margot Robbie. Are you kidding me? She's the best.

"I look up to her so much. I don't mind the comparisons. But it would be nice to move past that."

That hasn't stopped the comments from flowing online, with one fan writing on Twitter: "I refuse to believe Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey aren’t the same person."

Another posted a whole thread on the matter, stating: "Conspiracy theory: Margot Robbie is Emma Mackey.

"I mean they look so much alike!!! They could be mother and daughter....or sisters!!!! OR THE SAME PERSON!

"Have Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey been in the same room together? I think the f**k not."

The latter comments were made before it was revealed that Mackey is set to star in Barbie, which has Robbie as the lead.

Although Mackey's specific role has not yet been confirmed, many fans are praying her character will be related to her counterpart's, purely to ensure we're capitalising on their uncanny resemblance.

Although we're not sure if that would put the conspiracy theory to bed or just add fuel to the fire – guess we'll have to wait and see.
