Diane Keaton's friend speaks out on her condition in weeks before death aged 79

The actress died on Saturday (October 11) in California

Diane Keaton's longtime buddy has revealed what the 79-year-old was like in the weeks before her death.

On Saturday (October 11), the Something's Gotta Give star died in California.

News of Keaton's death was confirmed over the weekend by a spokesperson for the actress' family who said her loved ones are requesting privacy to process the tragedy.

While no further details have been given about the circumstances of her death, the Twin Peaks star has been candid about her health struggles in the past.

Now, her close pal has spoken out about her last moments with the iconic celeb.

Speaking to People, Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager said in the emotional interview that she was shocked by Keaton's appearance a few weeks before her passing.

"I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin," Sager said. "She had lost so much weight."

The Grammy winner, who also co-wrote Keaton's only single 'First Christmas' in 2024, said she had saw her buddy fewer times this year since the actress had relocated to Palm Springs for some time after the devastating wildfires tore through her home in California.

"She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything," she said. "She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she'd lost."

Despite her shocking appearance, Sager said Keaton was still a 'magic light for everyone.'

"I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.

"She went to the movies always dressed like she was about to shoot another scene for Annie Hall."

"She'd wear her hats and her jackets and her baggy pants, and her belts,” Sager continued. “She was a fashion icon of her own making."

Another buddy told the outlet that Keaton was 'funny right up until the end,' with the star having 'lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved.'

The tragic news comes as Keaton revealed in 2015 to the Los Angeles Times that she had a family history of cancer, in particular skin cancer, and admits she 'didn't really care' about the risks when in her early 20s.

During this time, Keaton struggled with basal cell carcinoma, and would later go on to develop squamous cell cancer decades afterwards which required two surgeries to remove.

The star had also revealed she struggled with the eating disorder bulimia, where she would eat large quantities of food before making herself throw it back up.

Keaton shared that she had sought help for the condition.
