While the majority of actors who've won an Oscar would say their families gave them one hell of a celebration, Kathy Bates unfortunately can't say the same.
Most people’s parents are their biggest supporters and even the slightest accomplishment is met with praise and admiration.
But this wasn’t exactly the case for Kathy Bates back when she won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1991 for her disturbing portrayal as Annie Wilkes in the film, Misery.

Speaking in a recent interview with Ben Mankiewicz on CBS Sunday Morning, Bates explained her mother’s comments weren’t exactly encouraging, alluding that she and her mother had a complicated relationship when she was alive.
Bates said: “When I won the Oscar for Misery, she [my mother] said, ‘I don’t know what all the excitement [is] about, you didn’t discover the cure for cancer'.”
Bates added that she also forgot to thank her mother in her acceptance speech that night.

But while the actress seemed adamant that she hadn’t thanked her mother, Mankiewicz insisted that she did. After a little back and forth, he played her the clip of her speech and it brought Bates close to tears.
A shocked expression on her face, Bates thanked the interviewer for bringing that moment back to her memory, and questioned why she had believed she hadn’t thanked her mother.
Seeing her begin to well up with emotion, Mankiewicz asked why this change in perspective meant so much to her.

Bates said it was a relief to know she thanked her mom, and said her mother ‘should have had my life'.
She added: “When she died, I said 'come into me'. I wanted her spirit to come into me. Even though we had so many difficulties, I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she’d given up.”
Clips of the interview have already started do the rounds on social media, with people being moved by Bates’ reaction.
“I wish I could hug Kathy," one user wrote on Reddit. "Kudos to Ben for giving her that moment that she so clearly craved and being so gentle with her."

“Such a genuine vulnerable moment. She's so beautiful. One of the best vids ive seen,” commented another.
“Her face when she heard it was so moving. It looked like years of angst just wiped away,” a third noted.
And another added: “It's fascinating how the little moments in life can shape our perceptions so deeply.
