She married engineer Alfred Roy Carey, and welcomed three children with him: Alison, Mariah, and a son named Morgan.
The couple divorced when Mariah was three years old.
While Carey credits her mother for her vocal talents, she previously shared that their relationship was complicated.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the Grammy-winning artist wrote: "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions."

"Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment," she continued.
"A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
The singer also dedicated her memoir in part to her mother, writing: "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could.

"I will love you the best I can, always."
In her memoir, Carey also detailed her relationship with her sister, and shared that it was oftentimes complex.
She wrote that it was 'emotionally and physically safer' for her 'not to have any contact' with her sister, and their brother Morgan. The star was notably estranged from her siblings, at least at the time of the memoir's release.
Carey's mother was 87 years old when she died, while her sister Alison was 63.
