Tish Cyrus opens up about ‘tough’ divorce from Billy Ray and how it affected their children

Tish Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus divorced after nearly three decades of marriage

Tish Cyrus has spoken out about how she 'never wanted to be divorced' and why her split from Billy Ray Cyrus was 'tough on everyone'.

Tish Cyrus-Purcell and Billy Ray Cyrus tied the knot in 1993 and went on to have three children together - Miley, Braison and Noah. Billy Ray also adopted Tish's children Brandi and Trace from her previous relationship.

During their nearly three decades together, the pair filed for divorce twice but called both off, however, in 2022, they announced they were splitting for good.

Tish has previously spoken out about how 'terrified' she was eventually going through a divorce with Billy Ray.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the 57-year-old explained she thought she was 'going to be alone forever' when trying to come to terms with the 'decision of stepping out of a 30-year marriage', seeing her experience a 'crippling breakdown of anxiety'.

And she's since opened up about how it wasn't just really hard on her but on the whole family too.

During an episode of the Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson podcast, which first aired yesterday (November 25), Tish emphasized she 'never wanted to be divorced' and felt the pressure of being 'in the public eye' and the world already being so 'unstable' at times.

However, despite wanting to 'make it work' - adding 'probably for a little too long' - there ultimately came a point where she 'didn't have a choice' and had to go through with the split for her 'own mental health'.

While Tish reflected she believes Billy Ray and her handled the divorce 'really well' and tried to make it as 'easy as possible for everyone involved', the kids were still impacted.

She explained Trace was 'bummed'. "He was like, ‘I wish my mom and dad would never get… I wish that wouldn’t have happened'," Tish said.

She noted how she grew up an 'only child and had the best upbringing and best parents and never went through anything like that' so can't really understand fully how it's 'affect[ed]' her and Billy Ray's kids, but admitted: "It was definitely something that was probably hard on them, no matter how you do it."

Tish has since remarried to Prison Break star Dominic Purcell and Billy Ray remarried to fellow musician Firerose, although the pair have since divorced.
