Haunting backstory behind cars which never left Giants Stadium commuter lot

Haunting backstory behind cars which never left Giants Stadium commuter lot

The abandoned cars are thought to have a harrowing story behind them

While you probably wouldn't usually think much about cars being abandoned, the reason behind these ones being left is particularly sad.

The photo in question is a handful of cars at the Giants Stadium parking lot, located just short of 10 miles from Manhattan, New York.

Undeniably, the picture is somewhat eerie, especially when coming to learn who owns the vehicles.

According to reports, the cars were owned by those who died in 9/11. Apparently, many used the lot to leave their cars and then commute into the city.

With the events that unfolded on 9/11, the car owners never made it back to retrieve their vehicles.

The haunting photo - which wasn't clearly dated - has been widely distributed online since the attack along with it's harrowing story.

The image was shared on Reddit three years ago, and people labeled it as 'depressing'.

One person wrote at the time: "All these years later and this is the first time I've ever seen or heard about this. One of those things you would not normally consider."

Another person echoed: "I've never seen this before either. Now I'm thinking about a lot of cars that people were looking forward to seeing after a long day at work. Sh*t's depressing."

"F**k. This is just sad," penned a different person.

Someone else elaborated on just how close the parking lot is to where the 9/11 tragedy occurred.

"Giants Stadium parking lot is huge and much if it is used as a commuter parking lot for people to take the train to the city, or elsewhere," they said.

"It's not that it's far from New York City, it's that parking in the city is very very expensive, so people park at the commuter lots for much less comparably, and take the train, or the bus. The cars that remained in the lot belonged to people that worked at the Trade Center or near it. Very sad."

Earlier this month marked the attack's 23rd anniversary. Despite it being over two decades on, the heartbreaking events still affects people now.

For example, Inez Robertson survived the attack and described the aftermath as something from a zombie film.

She was working at her job at an ad agency in Midtown when the planes struck the towers, but she had no idea at first that it was a terrorist attack.

"It wasn't until I got up to the 19th floor where I worked... by then the second plane had gone in. And then we were told it was a terrorist thing," she recalled.

Understandably, all members of staff were sent home.

Inez went on: "I was [walking] with somebody from my company, and we're just like, in shock. It was like in a movie. It was like a zombie movie or something."
