A couple found themselves in hot water after posting a video of themselves using a 'hack' to reduce their bill while eating out.

There are any number of hacks out there to help keep costs down, but one has got servers up in arms after a couple posted a video on social media.

If you've been outside lately you may have noticed that merely existing is becoming increasingly expensive.

So it's understandable that if you decide to spend money on going out for dinner then you might want to try and save a bit of money on your night out.

The obvious way to save money on going out is just not going out as much.

When you do go out you might skip the porterhouse and lobster surf 'n' turf with truffle fries and instead opt for something a little lighter on the old bank account.

Of course, this then has a negative knock on effect on the cafes, restaurants, bars, and clubs as people choose to stay at home, and spend less when they do go out.

But one particular 'hack' has got people riled up, labelling it as just straight up 'cheap'.

So what is this hack?

The pair shared a cup with a refillable soda.

Well, if you want to save some money while dining out then you can order a drink with free refills.

Then, you have just one cup which you place in the centre of the table and share, refilling it as necessary.

People piled onto social media to share their views on the trick.

One rather frankly wrote: "Then you can’t afford to eat out. I’m sure you tip like sh*t too. Stay the f*ck at home."

Another posted: "This is not a money saving hack, this is being stingey… go buy a 2L at a grocery store if you’re that broke but need soda."

One user was worried that the customers would not tip well, writing: “If you can’t afford another $2-$3 drink then I’m worried if you even tip good."

People shared their thoughts on the hack.

Meanwhile, someone who had worked as a server shared their thoughts.

They posted: "Worst tables to get ever. had someone ask me for a soda w no ice and a extra glass on the side once."

Others pointed out that a better way to save money would be to just not go out at all, or just order water.

One wrote: "Our money saving tactic is we’re both getting waters."

Another said: "My money saving hack is not to go out cuz I can't afford it."

But others were more supportive, with one writing: "With the prices for soda these days we do the same. $4 for a drink is insane!"
