What you wear at uni and what it says about you
Cheap pints, late night library seshes and a diet of beans on toast - yep, uni life is almost back!
With uni starting up again this month, thousands of students will either be heading back to their familiar haunts, or stepping foot on campus for the very first time. And whether you’re looking forward to meeting up with your course pals again or diving head first into freshers week, being at uni is all about finding your tribe. The mates you make at uni tend to be the ones you have for life and you can tell different groups a mile off depending on what they wear. The guys over at USC have identified some very distinct fashion styles that can be found at unis all over the UK.
So which campus subculture do you fit in and what does your campus style say about you?
DJ/Raver
Music is life for this group and their style is more function over fashion. Their style serves as a tool for their lifestyle so whether they’re behind the decks spinning some tunes or having a rave in their uni halls, they’ll be wearing something they can move and groove in such as a Lacoste track top. Sticking with this group will do wonders for your social life, but you might want to invest in some noise cancelling headphones if you end up in the same halls together…
Sports Casual
This group takes sportswear to another level, serving stylish and casual looks 24/7. With the sports casual crew you never know whether they’re heading to a gym class or just grabbing a coffee. I bet some of them don’t even have gym memberships, but they’re always ready to work out at the drop of a hat. Comfort doesn’t have to come at the expense of being trendy, so you'll find them in cool vintage football shirts, Puma trainers or some amazing Armani joggers.
Academic
Ahh the Academic. The people who would rather fail uni than be seen slumming it in the library in their sweats. You’ll find this group either in a fancy library with their nose in a book or in a coffee shop working away on their laptops. This group can’t even THINK about starting their course work if they’re not properly dressed for the occasion. And if you’re not wearing a smart button up, sweater or Levis rugby polo, there’s no point even opening up a text book.
Varsity
The varsity lot ensure their entire social life revolves around their team, their sport and their associated societies. We get it, you’re into sports. Always looking fresh and sporty they want you to know they’re always at the top of their game. When they’re not wearing their team shirts you’ll probably find them in bold Hugo Boss tees, or something similar.
Artists
And last but not least we have the artists. Carefully curating their look to match the intricacies of their personalities, this group can be found rummaging in charity shops wearing their vintage denim overalls in the hopes of finding unique pieces; often customising their finds to kick the quirky to another level. If you’re ever stuck for conversation with someone from this group, just ask them about their tote bag and you’ll be good for at least 30 minutes.
Uni is all about having fun and experimenting and playing around with your style is part of that. Not sure which group you fit in? Try on a few for size and see how they feel. There’s a proper sense of freedom while you’re working out which campus group you belong to. At uni, you can try athleisure wear on Monday, varsity style on Tuesday, and vintage chic on Wednesday. And USC is the place to get what you need. Their pieces can help you find your freshers style or get your wardrobe updated for the new uni year. This fashion journey of discovery is what makes going back to uni, or the feeling of a fresh start in September, so unique.
