Expert warns new Gen Z trend using bananas as 'natural botox' may actually be dangerous

Expert warns new Gen Z trend using bananas as 'natural botox' may actually be dangerous

A new day, a new weird skincare routine

Getting skincare right can prove to be difficult, but experts have dismissed the latest trend seen on social media due to the risks.

People are constantly trying to find ways to better their skincare routine... which pretty much means turning to the internet and trying everything and anything under the sun.

The latest trend that has taken hold sounds like something out of a comedy skit, but people on social media have insisted it works.

Influencers have racked up thousands of views and likes by suggesting people should be using banana peels as an exfoliant and rub it into their face...

Those pushing it have said it makes their skin more ‘glowy’ and this is due to the antioxidant within the fruit, arguing it is a type of ‘natural botox’.

However, experts have pretty much dismissed this idea as nonsense, despite the anecdotal evidence.

In fact, some have suggested that it could cause issues like irritating the skin or even causing spots.

Skincare expert Dr Dave Reilly, head scientist at skin company Absolute Collagen, reflected on the new trend and expressed doubts that it was actually doing much.

He said: “While eating bananas may be good for your skin, one of the latest TikTok money-saving trends is saving the peel to rub on your face.

“This trend has come from claims that banana skins contain 'lutein', an antioxidant that can help brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Other videos on the social media platform suggest that the banana peel will also act as an exfoliant for your skin.

“While it may be true that banana peel contains this antioxidant, it will not be topically absorbed through direct application to the skin. The concentration of lutein in the peel is also not high enough to produce significant results.”

He didn’t downplay the importance of a good skincare routine, but argued that TikTok trends often spread false information rather than anything focused on data and facts.

What was it that your parents used to say about not believing everything you see on the internet...

He continued: “Unfortunately, TikTok trends like these often spread misinformation about skincare and can become popular quickly.

“That is why I would always recommend sticking to your trusted skincare routine and avoiding any skincare 'hacks' to minimize the risk of irritation.”

But hey, what do the experts know, maybe it's best to get a banana and go to town on your face to see what happens.
