An Uber Eats driver has divided the crowd after asking a customer for gas money.

Customer Exavier Pope took to Twitter to share how baffled he was by the whole experience.

The Chicago man posted a screenshot of his exchange with the delivery driver who sent an unexpected text explaining how they were running out of gas.

“This Uber Eats Driver just asked me to CashApp him gas money to bring my food to me,” Pope tweeted on May 31.

And the following text message from the driver read: "Yo its ur uber driver.

"I cant make it to u unless I can somehow get gas money."

"I'm gonna run outta gas can you cash app me a few bucks for gas please I had no idea u were that far," they added.

After the first set of text messages, Pope says they called him five times.

"This is harassment," he tweeted.

While there was a bit of a back and forth between driver and customer, Pope received a text message that the Uber Eats employee had somehow made it to the property.

"I've arrived," the driver said.

To which Pope replied: "I do not feel safe taking the order."

"Bro just come get ur food," responded the Uber Eats driver.

"Or text me the pin. I'll leave at the gate."

Pope hits back: "I will not send anything."

In a follow-up tweet, the customer said he was going to ring the police if the driver didn't leave.

Pope then shared an image of his food order 'left on the ground outside like trash'.

"No way I’d risk being robbed just for a hot plate that wasn’t even going to be hot and possibly tampered with," Pope complained.

However, some people thought Pope could have dealt with the situation differently.

“You should have sent him $5 and then reduced the tip by $5 if you’re so concerned,” one person commented.

“The request was unprofessional, but you handled the situation poorly,” added another. “It was not necessary to escalate to the point of threatening to call the police on your Uber Eats driver.”

Others thought he dealt with it in the best way he could.

"I wonder how many other people he's done this too," someone else thought.

While another person added: "Wait, how are YOU somehow the villain in this?"

Uber Support did tweet Pope the following message: "Thank you for bringing this to our attention - behavior like this is definitely not OK!

"A member of our team is on top of this and will follow up with you via in-app as well as to the email address associated with your Uber account."
