Nobody ever thinks they will see feces rain down on them from the sky, but when it does, they certainly don’t know what to do about it.
As Americans experience the reportedly ‘unsurvivable’ Hurricane Helene in the Western Hemisphere, a less deadly yet more peculiar incident struck Nanning, China, earlier this week.
The city in Southern China experienced what some have called a ‘poo-cano’ on Tuesday morning, with videos of the incident going viral on X (formerly Twitter) in the days since the strange event occurred.

For context, the whirlwind of feces was not some newly discovered natural disaster that we all must live in fear of, but rather one of the worst-case scenarios that could stem from the rupturing of a sewage pipe near a city street in the middle of the day.
After the pipe erupted, it created a large brown cloud that not only blocked the views of drivers and motorcyclists on the busy street, but also rained human waste down onto them and their vehicles, making for a deeply unpleasant morning drive.
While, luckily, there were no notable injuries suffered by the people who were forced to withstand such a bizarre incident, several vehicles were severely damaged in the process. Plus, as you’d likely expect, the stains and smells left on the cars and motorcycles were not easy to fix for the impacted commuters.

Those who witnessed footage of the ‘poo-cano’ online were quick to empathize with those involved in the incident, as well as the people who would likely be forced to deal with the aftermath.

“The poor car wash employees when this car pulls up,” one X user commented in response to a dash cam video of a car being covered in human waste.
Another shared a similar sentiment: “First stop: car wash... They’re definitely having a bad day.”
Another commenter noted his expectations going into the video, saying: “I really thought he’d make it past the explosion when it happened.
“Then, it started raining crap.”

The pipe ruptured due to a pressure test being conducted by city officials, which clearly went haywire in a way that nobody could’ve expected. A cleanup crew was sent to take care of the massive amounts of human waste that now covered the city streets, but the 33-foot cloud of feces raining down from the sky is likely something the people of Nanning won’t forget (or stop smelling) anytime soon.
