Ana de Armas announces she’s about to be a US citizen

Blonde actor Ana de Armas has announced that she will soon be a US citizen.

For those that have watched the US show, you'll know that Saturday Night Live monologues can range from some of the most emotional to funny and even cringeworthy moments on TV.

Moments on the show have provided countless memes over the years, anybody remember 'ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd', which was said by Daniel Craig as he introduced the popular group.

That meme is still played on every Friday night to this day.

Anyway, I digress. On Saturday evening (15 April), Ana de Armas was on hosting duties and her monologue certainly fell into the sincere category.

The Spanish-Cuban actor told the audience how she learnt English from watching the much-loved TV show Friends.

After that, de Armas made a bit of a confession that shocked a lot of the audience.

"This has been a magical year. Not only [was] I nominated for an Oscar, but in three weeks I’m gonna officially become an American citizen," she said.

"I am proud to become a citizen because when I moved here, everyone was so welcoming."

After making that pretty big announcement, de Armas spoke about one of her former co-stars and all-round screen legend Robert De Niro.

She said: "When I did my first movie in the US, called Hands of Stone, I got to work with Robert De Niro.

"And one day on set, he told me, ‘I may be going to Cuba soon. If I do, I’ll say hello to your family.’ He even asked me for the phone number.

"I completely forgot about it, and then one day out of the blue, I get a phone call from my dad.

"He’s hysterical. I’m like, ‘Dad, what’s wrong?’ He’s like, ‘Robert De Niro just came to visit me at work.’

"That was such a kind gesture, and I’ve been so fortunate to work with so many supportive actors."

De Armas continued: "My dad was so proud of me, and he would be proud to see me today, standing on this stage. I feel very lucky to be here."

The rise of de Armas as an actor has been quite extraordinary, with her being one of the biggest names in Hollywood these days.

The 34-year-old was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year for her role playing Marilyn Monroe in the biopic Blonde.

Later this month, her new Apple TV+ film Ghosted, alongside Chris Evans, graces our screens.
