The classic tale of Cinderella is set to be turned into an incredibly gory horror film with 'truly horrific deaths' peppered throughout.

While many of us have come to know the story of Cinderella as a Disney classic, famed for the titular character finding her 'Happily Ever After' after being rescued by her Prince Charming - it's clear this modern adaptation couldn't be further from the fairytale that we all grew up with.

Well, the beloved story is gearing up for a brand-new bloody makeover titled aptly Cinderella's Curse and it's going to hit our screens later this fall.

It's true that most fairytales have pretty horrific origins with creators like the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault commonly featuring a load of grisly deaths and heinous crimes in their dark cautionary tales.

Take Cinderella for example, which has roots far more sinister than a bubbly fairy-godmother and some pesky stepsisters.

The original story, published by Perrault back in 1697, and then the Grimm brothers in 1812, featured a young girl who tragically loses her mother and struggles with her father remarrying an evil woman with two equally awful daughters who treat her poorly.

It's clear that Disney knows just how to polish up such stories considering they left out all the slightly less sanitary parts - one of which included the stepsisters slicing off parts of their feet in order to fit into Cinderella's famous glass slipper that she left at the ball.

But, after over half a century since the film was released in 1950, it seems the original bloody origins are finally being given some airtime.

The beloved fairytale is gearing up for a 'dark retelling'.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the new flick will be produced and directed by Louisa Warren and is being written by Harry Boxley.

The cast for Cinderella's Curse, which is in the works at ChampDog Films, also includes the likes of Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna and Danielle Scott.

Director Warren told the outlet: "This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know. There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands."

She added: "I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling."

The upcoming movie joins a whole bunch of other independent projects putting an incredibly dark and macabre spin on beloved fairy tales and children's stories within the public domain.

From the haunting Winnie the Pooh adaptation, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, to a possible horrifying remake of Teletubbies - it's clear there's definitely a bit of a trend going on right now in the horror movie genre, and let's just say it's sent the internet into quite the frenzy.

Upon hearing the news, one Twitter user posted: "First Winnie The Pooh and now Cinderella? What's going on here?!"

A second echoed: "I'm all for fun unique spins of old fairy tales but seriously enough with the horror takes. It seems thats all they can think of which is so lazy."

While a third wondered: "Does that mean we get to see the stepsisters cut off their heel and big toe and have their eyes pecked out!"

"OMG," demanded a fourth, "stop turning our childhood into horror films!"

Well, with filming set to commence in the UK next month and a reported proposed release date for October 2023 - I guess we'll all have to just wait and see...
