It was confirmed yesterday (7 June) that Joaquin Phoenix would be returning as Arthur Fleck in a sequel to Todd Phillip’s 2019 hit Joker, and fans are already convinced they’ve got Joker 2’s plot figured out.
Posting a photo of the sequel’s script on Instagram, Phillips not only confirmed he’d be returning to direct, but also revealed the film would be called Joker: Folie à Deux.

The phrase means 'the shared madness of two', and after discovering this, fans were quick to recall a recent interview in which Willem Dafoe hinted at a similar Joker 2 plot idea, suggesting he might be involved in the sequel.
Speaking to GQ back in January, Dafoe said he’d ‘dreamed up’ an idea for a Joker sequel, saying: “There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker Imposter. If you had Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did."
Dafoe’s comments have riled up fans, with some pointing out that Dafoe’s idea was similar to a comic book storyline in The Return of the Joker, which sees a villain pose as Batman’s arch nemesis.
One person tweeted: "I just know Warner Brother execs were apprehensive on a Joker sequel until Willem Dafoe randomly blurted out that he wanted to be in it."

Another added: "Maybe Willem Dafoe as another Joker like he suggested some time ago?" while a third echoed: “Willem Dafoe as Joker could actually happen.”
“So it’s possible we’ll get Willem Dafoe as the other Joker,” penned a fourth social media user.
Other comments included: “Make the second Joker Willem Dafoe” and “If Willem Dafoe isn't in Joker 2 then I don't want it.”
Others suggested the Joker’s partner in crime could be Harley Quinn, although it's unlikely to be Margot Robbie's iteration of the character as she exists in a different universe to Phoenix's supervillain.

Phillip’s revealed Phoenix will be returning to the role by sharing a picture of the 47-year-old actor reading the script.
In the wake of Phillip’s social media post, fans rushed to share their excitement on social media, with one writing on Twitter: "I'm thinking Joker is about to spread some more anarchy to the villains of DC or Batman!"
"News of the #Joker sequel has got me excited to see what #ToddPhillips and #JoaquinPhoenix have in store," said another.

A third added: "I experienced real art through cinema in October 2019 with Joker. I’m sooo ready for the sequel and saying I’m excited is an understatement."
