The creator of Freaks and Geeks has finally addressed the calls for the iconic show to return - but there is a catch.

A lot of the biggest names in Hollywood had pretty humble beginnings, and many owe their success to starring in this one show.

If you haven’t heard of the coming of age comedy show, well firstly... what are you doing? Go watch it now!

Secondly, even if you haven’t heard of the show, you have definitely heard of its cast.

If you threw it up on your screens right now, you would immediately recognize the soon to be all-star actors.

It included a young Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen and Busy Philipps, just to name a few.

While the show only ran for one season, it has been beloved since it debuted back in 1999.

“Listen, I don’t care whether Netflix keeps or doesn’t keep Friends, all I want is a reboot of Freaks and Geeks,” one fan on Twitter wrote.

“it’s never too late for a freaks and geeks reboot. i need to see them as adults,” another commented.

“If Paul/Judd were to create (or even reboot) FREAKS & GEEKS today, it would be the most popular show on TV,”

So the desire is certainly there, but what does the creator think?

The mind behind the show, director Paul Feig, spoke to UNILAD about his upcoming film JACKPOT!, starring Awkwafina and John Cena, and weighed in after being asked about a possible reboot.

He said: “This September I believe is the 25th anniversary of the show.

“I mean, people always want to do a sequel, reunion or something and I'm not a fan of those kind of things.

“I’ve rarely seen them be like ‘oh I’m so glad they did that’ [more often] its ‘oh I kind of wish they didn’t do that.’”

While that might not sound the most encouraging for a reboot, Feig admitted there is a slither of hope.

“If I had a story, if some great idea came into my head, yeah, fine. Because also, the [actors] are still young, it is always sad when you do a reunion and they are all old.

“But they are all in their prime so you never know.”

So it sounds like Feig is a firm maybe, but another piece of the puzzle might not be so hard to convince.

In 2023, one of the show's stars, Seth Rogen, dismissed chances of a reboot or reunion of some kind.

Speaking to People, he said: “I know enough now not to f*** with that, to just let it be good and not try to go revisit it.

    “Just let it exist.”

So, who knows whether we will be seeing a return of Freaks and Geeks, but it’s fun to dream.

JACKPOT! is available worldwide on Prime Video on 15 August 2024.
