The filmmakers had no idea how significant the casting would become

Gwen Stefani has claimed that Angelina Jolie beat her to the part in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Jolie starred alongside Brad Pitt in the 2005 flick, and the pair fell in love, sparking the birth of 'Brangelina'.

But things could have panned out so differently, according to Stefani.

The co-stars ended up getting married.

The Grammy-winning singer - who also has numerous film credits to her name - made the revelation on The Ellen Show yesterday (Thursday 7 April).

During the 'Burning Questions' segment of the show, the host asked: "What movie role have you auditioned for that people would be surprised to know?"

Stefani, 52, answered: "Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Angelina beat me."

"That could have gone a whole different way," DeGeneres replied. "Talk about sliding doors."

Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston during the making of the movie, but they got divorced shortly after its release.

In an interview the following year, Jolie admitted that she and Brad fell for each other on the set of the movie.

She told Vogue: "Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened.

"I think a few months in I realised, 'God, I can't wait to get to work.' … Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair."

She added: "It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realise that it might mean something more than we'd earlier allowed ourselves to believe.

"And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration."

They married in 2014 and have six children together - three of which are biological, three of which are adopted.

Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 and the Oscar winners have been embroiled in a custody battle over their five minor children since their separation.
