The highly anticipated return of the Sanderson Sisters is finally within reach as Disney has released a new trailer for the sequel to Hocus Pocus.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are back as Salem's witchiest residents, and after 29 years since their last appearance, they're on the hunt for revenge.

This time, it will be up to three high school students to prevent the sisters from wreaking a new kind of havoc in the city, with the chaos taking place on the night before Halloween.

As well as the returning witches, Hocus Pocus 2 will star The Shape of Water actor Doug Jones, Gossip Girl's Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham, Belissa Escobedo and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham.

The trailer sees the unsuspecting high school students taking on an annual birthday ritual, only this time their chant results in a fault in the Earth, which resurrects Sarah, Mary and Winifred.

The latter witch encourages the residents of Salem to 'lock up [their] children', warning: "Yes, Salem, we're back!"

Fans were over the moon to learn that beloved 90s film was getting a sequel, with original star Thora Birch, who played Dani Dennison in Hocus Pocus, telling Hollywood Life she was 'excited' for the project even though details about the plot remained a mystery.

The sequel comes 29 years after the original.

"They've been talking about this reboot for five years. I'm excited to see what it all looks like. I know a little bit about a couple of ideas for stories, but I don't know where it's all going to fall at the end of the day," she commented.

The sequel has been directed by Anna Fletcher, who took the reins from Kenny Ortega.

Fletcher said she is 'beyond thrilled' to be involved in the project in a statement discussing the news, saying: “Fans around the world have embraced these characters and have made this film a Halloween tradition whose popularity continues to grow, and how lucky am I to be back at Disney with these three extraordinarily talented ladies in the iconic roles they created, as well as our fabulous new additions to the cast?”

Sex and the City star Parker previously told Andy Cohen reuniting with the Hocus Pocus cast was 'amazing and funny and ridiculous and all sorts of things' – so if that's what we can expect from the film, we're in for an entertaining time.

Hocus Pocus 2 is set to stream on Disney+ on 30 September.
