Spy Kids is getting a remake, Netflix has confirmed.
The streaming giant has marked the 21st anniversary of the iconic spy comedy by revealing it's set to produce a reboot of the beloved franchise, with original director Robert Rodriguez back at the helm.
"The 21st anniversary of the beloved action comedy feels like the perfect time to reveal that Robert Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce a reimagining of the beloved franchise and introduce the world to a new family of spies," Netflix tweeted.
The announcement comes after Deadline first reported the news that Rodriguez was working on a reimagining of the 2001 movie back in January 2021.

No plot details have so far been released, but the remake is expected to 'revolve around the activities of a multicultural family.'
The original movie starred Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as a married spy couple who are mysteriously kidnapped, leaving their young children Juni and Carmen Cortez, played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, to come to their rescue. The original movie also featured the likes of Alan Cumming, Teri Hatcher and Danny Trejo, as well as the iconic 'Thumb-Thumbs.'
It's unclear whether any of the original cast members will play a role in the upcoming film.
Spy Kids was a surprise hit, and went on to spawn three sequels - Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and Spy Kids: All The Time in the World, which starred an entirely new cast led by Jessica Alba and Joel McHale. The franchise grossed more than $550 million globally and has gained cult status among kids who grew up in the 2000s.

In 2018, Rodriguez created and executive produced Spy Kids: Mission Critical - an animated series which followed the Cortez siblings as they attended Spy Kids Academy.
Rodriguez is best known for his From Dusk Till Dawn and Mexico trilogies, and most recently helmed Disney+'s latest Star Wars spin-off, The Book of Boba Fett.
The new, as yet untitled remake will be produced by Skydance Media and franchise rights holder Spyglass Media in collaboration with Netflix, with Spyglass and Rodriguez inking a deal to bring the series back to the big screen over a year ago.
