Originally running from 2005 to 2008, the story is set in a fictional world where people live in four nations based on fire, water, earth, and air.
People from each of these nations can also learn to control, or 'bend', certain elements of them, with the aggressive Fire Nation being set up as the villains.
But there is also one individual, the Avatar, who is capable of mastering not just one, but all four of the elements.

The animated series proved hugely popular when it was released, and was previously made into a live action movie in 2010.
However, the film was poorly received by audiences, with many feeling that it did not do justice to the animated series.
Now however, a live action series may be able to more closely follow the story of the animated series without the time constraints of a movie.
The cast of the new series is set to include Paul Sun-Hyung Lee , known for his recurring role in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

Other cast members include Daniel Dae Kim of Lost, Tamlyn Tomita of Cobra Kai, as well as Ken Leung, Elizabeth Yu, Ian Ousley, and Gordon Cormier.
The live action series has been touted as bring elements of the animated series to life in a live action setting for the first time.
Fans have already taken to social media to share their excitement, and maybe slight apprehension, at the upcoming series.

One person wrote: "I will reserve judgment until I see this but man that animated show…. still the best."
Another made it clear that they have high expectations, saying: "Expectations for this are HIGH. Praying they got this adaptation right. The trailer from months ago looked fantastic."
But someone else was still apprehensive about the live action series after the 2010 movie did not meet their expectations.
They wrote: "I'm only giving this series one episode to impress me because the trauma from that movie still haunts me."
