Viewers thrilled after Netflix announces renewal of ‘masterpiece’ sci-fi series that had people hooked in minutes

After a recent announcement, Netflix users are overjoyed a 'masterpiece' sci-fi series has been renewed for a second season

Netflix users are flooding to social media in joy after the platform revealed it has greenlit additional episodes of a 'masterpiece' sci-fi series.

If you haven't already finished the limited sci-fi series - which had viewers all saying the same thing - and want to begin a series that has a second season in the bag, then prepare to hop onto Netflix as soon as you get home.

The series - titled 3 Body Problem - was created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss - best known for Game of Thrones - alongside Alexander Woo (The Terror).

It stars Jovan Adepo, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong and Benedict Wong.

Inspired by a trilogy of novels with the same title - written by Chinese author Cixin Liu - the series is set against the backdrop of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and a secret military project sending signals into space to make contact with aliens.

A group of aliens end up receiving the signals - but what will they do? Will they ignore them, make contact with Earth or even invade?

And at Netflix's Upfront presentation, it was announced the streaming service has greenlit additional episodes of the series.

Netflix's vice president of scripted series, Peter Friedlander, said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter: "The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo, will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End.

"Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership - and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store."

In a statement, showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss, and Alexander Woo added: "We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.

"Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!"

And it's not taken long for fans of the show to flood to social media to respond to the news.

One X user said: "Oh good afternoon."

"REHYDRATE THE MASSES!!!" Another added.

A third commented: "The best decision they could have made it. Thanks Netflix."

While the additional episodes - which will form a sort of second season for the series - have been announced as providing a finale to 3 Body Problem, with its showrunners having previously spoken out about hopes for more seasons.

In an interview with Inside Total Film podcast and GamesRadar+, Woo reflected how there's three novels which all get 'longer and longer' as they go on, so he wouldn't say 'it maps out exactly to three [seasons]'.

He added: "We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that's three or four, you know, or some other number…

"The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons but beyond that, it's hard to know exactly."

Whether the 'additional episodes' greenlit by Netflix could lead to not just a season two but third season as well, who knows, but here's holding out hope.
