Netflix fans have branded a movie 'upsetting on so many levels' as it lands a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating.

There are plenty of films out there which are real tearjerkers.

And it's usually the ones inspired by true stories that really pull on our heartstrings.

Take the 1997 classic Titanic for example - we know it's going to end in tragedy every time, yet we can't help but rewatch.

Or how about emotional gut-punch The Notebook, which follows an unlikely relationship between a couple from opposite societal classes.

Now, Netflix's latest addition has climbed to the number two spot of its US film chart.

Based on the tragic, real-life story of a young American, the biopic was initially released in August.

Titled Rob Peace, it follows the life of a bright New Jersey native with the odds stacked against him.

Despite excelling in math and science, Rob's upbringing is muddied by his father's double murder conviction.

As he grows up, eventually joining the prestigious Yale University, he risks everything he's built to prove his father's innocence.

It's a tough journey, and the family is blighted by multiple, gut-wrenching tragedies along the way.

Leading the cast is Tulsa King's Jay Will as Rob, while Chiwetel Ejiofor - who both wrote and directed the movie - portrays dad Robert 'Skeet' Peace.

The star-studded line-up also features Mary J. Blige, Camila Cabello, Mare Winningham and Michael Kelly.

Despite its 'heavy' storyline, Rob Peace has been awarded a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

Audiences rated it 94 percent, while critics gave it just 74 percent.

One fan hailed the movie a 'must-see,' adding: "A story to be told. Portrayed exceptionally."

And the praise continued over on Twitter, where one fan wrote: "Watching Rob Peace on Netflix. It’s upsetting on so many levels. A really good movie. A really sad story. Heavy."

A second said: "I just watch Rob Peace on Netflix and it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time! Wow."

A third wrote: "Rob Peace is one of the best Netflix movies I’ve seen wow."
