The creator of a beloved Drew Barrymore series has detailed the horrible way they found out Netflix had decided to axe the show.

While Barrymore may be best known for her own talk show where she speaks to a variety of different famous faces, she has also starred in her fair share of TV shows.

The 49-year-old starred in Santa Clarita Diet as a real estate agent who turns into a zombie - it really is that type of horror!

More so a comedy series however, the series garnered quite the fanbase while it aired from 2017 to 2019.

Timothy Olyphant also featured in the series, playing Barrymore's husband, who had to try his hardest to hide the fact Barrymore's character is after human flesh.

Three seasons released on Netflix, but the streaming platform decided not to release a fourth season, much to the fans' disappointment.

It came as a massive surprise to many, as season three of Santa Clarita Diet ended on a cliffhanger, which left fans expecting more.

However, Netflix decided against commissioning a fourth season, and the show's creator, Victor Fresco, has recently lifted the lid on how he found out another season of Santa Clarita Diet would not be coming.

Fresco discovered the show's fate from his assistant rather than Netflix themselves, with the former stating the sets from the previous series were being dismantled.

He told the Guardian: "That’s how I heard it was definitively not coming back. We had an inkling it might not come into a fourth year.

"We didn’t want to make it easier for them to cancel us. We thought ‘Why are we doing their work for them?’”

The creator spoke further about Netflix axing the show, and why he feels it made no sense for the streaming giant to pull the plug.

"If you look closely at your deal, you’ll see that there’s a huge disincentive for them to order seasons four and five because they’re really making a big payout then," he added.

Season three of Santa Clarita Diet sits at a perfect 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, which makes you think why did Netflix axe the show?

Kristy Puchko, from Pajiba, penned: "Barrymore is once more a force of nature whether she's leaping into attack mode or quipping it up with Olyphant. Their chemistry is explosive, and the writing on the series makes their bond feel as authentically intimate as it is hilarious and enthralling."

While the Guardian's Lucy Mangan wrote: "Santa Clarita Diet remains a gorgeously flavourful one. Fill up."
