Netflix viewers have been left disturbed by a new series on the streaming platform that 'lingers at the back of your head'.

It follows the case of 25-year-old Sheena Bora who mysteriously went missing in April 2012.

She supposedly sent her boyfriend and step-brother Rahul Mukerjea a break-up text.

Her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, claimed at the time that Sheena had left India to continue her education in the US.

Indrani would go on to become one of the prime suspects in the case however, and was arrested three years later in connection with Sheena’s alleged murder.

Sheena's step-father, Peter Mukerjea, was later arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with a subsequent charge sheet describing him and his wife as 'equal participants' in getting rid of Indrani's daughter.

Indrani was sent to a women’s-only prison in Mumbai after several of her pleas for bail were rejected.

However, she was granted bail in 2022, allowing her to be released on bail following seven years in prison.

The complicated case is now being told in a new Netflix docuseries, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth.

“Some questions will haunt you forever, and some scars refuse to fade away,” a tagline for the series states.

The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth has been climbing Netflix's TV charts and has left viewers well and truly shocked.

One particular Facebook user took to the social media platform to share their views.

They wrote: "One of the most disturbing docu-series on Netflix. While it appears incomplete owing to non-participation of the major players, whatever little crumbs they gathered shocks you to the core.

"The extremity of human psyche in lying, manipulation, control, coercion is exposed brilliantly here. The set-up, angles of locations in Mumbai is so creepily portrayed you wont be able to see the city the same way again.

"The series just lingers at the back of the head even after weeks. Narcissism is scarily displayed here. Even though the series seems half-way left, it certainly is not for the faint-hearted."

While over on X, one viewer called the series 'harrowing as heck'.

Another added: "The Indrani Mukerjea story: Buried truth on Netflix is full of plot twist after plot twist."

    And someone else: "10/10 documentary!"

Since dropping on the streaming service on February 29, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth has a 63 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stephanie Morgan, from Common Sense Media, wrote: "This is a riveting exploration into the depths of familial dysfunction set against the backdrop of Mumbai's high society."

While Gulf News' Manjusha Radhakrishnan penned: "The documentary also serves as a stark reminder that human nature is complex and ambition can often lead you to plummet to harrowing depths."
