With Halloween just around the corner, many of us will be searching for horror films.

If you are looking for something less mainstream though, one man has recommended a spine-chilling Stockholm Syndrome-themed film.

Whilst Hippopotamus has got a pretty low rating on IMDB, a recent viewer has raved about the indie film on social media. Check out the trailer below:

Available to stream on Prime Video, Hippopotamus centres around a 25-year-old woman, Ruby, (Ingvild Deila) who awakens in a locked room.

Unable to move, her captor Rob (Jonathan Cobb) then introduces himself and says she will be unable to leave until she falls in love with him.

Not only that, but her mind will reset every night and she will awake each morning with no memory of what happened the day before.

The indie horror was released in 2018 and had largely slipped under the radar, until TikTok user @Rickysixsixsix discovered it while trying to find something to watch.

The indie horror has taken TikTok by surprise.

Raving about the Stockholm Syndrome thriller, he told his 264,000 followers: “…this film took me in directions I never expected it to go, and this movie will make you question everything.”

Continuing, he added: “It’s psychological horror at its best…the acting in this movie is spot on…it’s like they’ve almost made this film in way so you know what you are watching is fiction.”

Whilst that eerie review might intrigue potential viewers, the film has a less impressive score of 5.3 out of 10 on IMDB and has sparked debate among film buffs.

Hippopotamus has divided opinion on IMDB.

In fact, one reviewer says that they guessed the ending early on in the film.

Scoring the film just three out of ten, they wrote: “I hate to say I sort of guessed what was going on, but that may have been the intent…The dialogue needed to be more clever and the personalities were too dry.”

Another reviewer, who scored the psychological horror a mesly one, added: “No explanation is ever given of the title and the ending makes no sense. I am not sure what more to say about this one.”

However, others seemed to share the TikToker’s view with many high scores awarded to this unusual, indie horror.

A third viewer gave the film ten out of ten, saying: “Absolutely beautiful cinematography. Despite the entire film being shot in one room, it's not boring at all and you're intrigued the entire time.”

You’ll have to make your mind up for yourself, after watching Hippopotamus on Amazon Prime.
