Joaquin Phoenix fans are already dubbing his new film Napoleon 'the movie of the year' after an intense battle scene was teased in the run-up to the film's release.

You can watch the gripping clip below:

Ever since bagging his 2020 Oscar for Best Actor following his knock-out performance in Joker, fans of Phoenix have been desperate to see what he'll do next.

And last year, when it was revealed that the 49-year-old actor would be taking on the titular role of historical legend Napoleon Bonaparte.

The new movie - which will depict the French leader's rise to power, as well as his relationship with Empress Joséphine - will hit cinemas at the end of this month.

The teaser trailers that have been doing the rounds on social media in recent weeks have given excited fans a glimpse into what they can expect from the potential blockbuster.

And this weekend, Sony published another teaser, giving fans a look at the upcoming depiction of the Battle of Austerlitz from Ridley Scott’s film.

Many fans have been unable to contain their excitement for the historical drama.

"Finally a movie that is worth going to the cinema for. Thank god there are still filmmakers like Ridley Scott," one social media wrote.

"You don't know how refreshing it is to see a movie that isn't yet another mind-numbing special effects extravaganza."

Another gushed: "Music, the cinematography, the action, how does Ridley Scott make the best big battle movies in cinema? He's one of the greatest artists of our lifetime."

"Im sooo hyped for this man, this is probably gonna be my movie of the year," a third penned.

"Wow! Haven’t seen a huge war epic like this since Troy, Lord of the Rings, and Gladiator! This looks wicked sweet!! The soundtrack is especially chilling," added a fourth.

The film will be an epic biopic of Napoleon's life.

The hype comes just weeks after Scott admitted he wanted to release a whopping four-and-a-half hour cut of the upcoming biopic.

The extended cut will reportedly focus more on Josephine's character, fleshing out the relationship far more.

But it wouldn't be the first time that Scott has released a separate cut of one of his movies.

Sci-fi noir thriller Blade Runner has become notorious for the number of different cuts that have been released, with fans debating over which one is the definitive film.

Scott is also no stranger to movies with very long run times.

Gladiator - who also starred Phoenix as the antagonist - clocked in at an impressive 155 minutes for the theatrical release, while American Gangster was 157 minutes.
