The first official trailer for The Last of Us season two has dropped and fans are absolutely losing it.
Based on Naughty Dog's widely popular video game of the same name, The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic series set in a world where a fungal-based virus called Cordyceps rips its way through society and turns all those infected into flesh-eating, zombie-like creatures.
The first season of The Last of Us follows the journey of two strangers, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who become like father and daughter as they struggle to survive and fulfill a mission that could save the world.

Now, do skip the next few paragraphs if you haven't yet seen the first season of The Last of Us and don't want any spoilers but…
Season one of The Last of Us essentially ends with audiences learning that Ellie may hold the cure for Cordyceps as she seems to be the only person who's been infected - but completely immune to its symptoms.
In an effort to make a cure, Joel takes Ellie to an outpost where a group of scientists and doctors are waiting for them. However, he soon learns that the procedure they have planned to study and potentially extract a cure from Ellie, will ultimately kill her.

Faced with the ethical dilemma of letting a young girl die to potentially save millions, or only save the young girl who's become like a daughter to him instead, Joel picks the latter and essentially goes on a rampage killing all the scientists at the outpost and taking Ellie back home with him to their safe haven in Jackson.
Alright, since we're all up to speed again, check out the full trailer for The Last of Us season two below that picks up five years after the events of season one:
Following a few years of peaceful serenity, it seems that The Last of Us season two is largely going to deal with Joel facing the aftermath of the decision he took five years ago, with some new faces — some friendly and others, not so much — coming his way and Ellie's.

Fans who've played the video game, have already begun to point out different scenes the trailer teases that they claim television-only audiences won't be ready for.
"This scene is going to ruin lives. [If you know you know]," one fan wrote on Twitter atop a screenshot of Ellie crying from the trailer.
"As a hardcore fan of [The Last of Us 2], I am very nervous on how they'll adapt the story," another fan wrote. "But I have to admit, that was a pretty cool trailer."

Other fans are already worried about the fate of a new character the show is introducing in season two, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).
"She 'bout to get a lot of hate. If you know, you know," one fan replied to an image of Abby from the trailer.
Of course, anyone who played the games would know why fans are worried. But it so far seems that HBO is swiftly setting up course for what's likely to be its most ambitious season for The Last of Us yet.
Season 2 of The Last of Us releases in 2025.
