A scene in a rom-com starring Julia Roberts still has viewers asking the same question nearly 20 years on.

If you've already binged-watched your way through the best rom-com series of the entire year, which was released onto Netflix earlier this month, then how about diving back into the archives for a movie starring Julia Roberts nonetheless?

The screenplay to My Best Friend's Wedding was written and co-produced by Ronald Bass (Persuasion) and directed by P. J. Hogan (2003's Peter Pan).

It stars the likes of Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman), Dermot Mulroney (Anyone But You), Cameron Diaz (The Holiday) and Rupert Everett (St Trinian's).

The story centers around food critic Julianne Potter (Roberts) who finds out her best friend Michael (Mulroney) is about to get married to Kimberly Wallace (Diaz) in just five days.

Overcome with feelings of jealousy and questioning whether she's in love with him herself, Julianne sets out to sabotage the relationship and marry Michael herself. However, as Shakespeare always warned us, the course of true love never did run smooth.

And if that wasn't all scandalous enough already, there's one particular moment in the movie which viewers can't seem to get over.

The scene with the much-loved actor which has left viewers fuming, unable to get over what happened or even comprehend why it had to happen like it did nearly two decades since the film was first released.

The scene involves Michael and Julianne and sees Michael take fiancé Kimberly's ring off Julianne's finger from where it's become stuck.

Although, he doesn't just take her finger and remove it with his own - perhaps with the help of good old fashioned butter or Vaseline - but takes her finger in his mouth and manovure's the ring off with his lips.

Granted, it's weird why Julianne even tried the ring on her finger in the first place, but that shouldn't take away from the real issue here - the finger sucking.

And it may've been over two decades since the film was first released, but that hasn't done much to lessen viewers' outrage over the scene.

A Twitter user responded to a post about the moment, asking: "Genuinely why did he do this? with his wedding right around the corner."

"Cameron diaz deserves to shoot them both," another added.

A third commented: "Imagine wanting her and then acting like she was CRAZY….. He was a gaslighter!"

And a fourth wrote: Tthis scene and the one on the ferry where he’s basically baiting her to confess that she loves him. he’s actually a villain."
