Everything gets a sequel these days, so it shouldn't be a shock to anyone when one gets announced.
However, this announcement has come as a shock to some fans as the first flick was a rather disturbing affair.
We all know how Hollywood works and if a film makes even the tinniest bit of profit you can bet there is an executive pushing for another.

It doesn’t matter if the story calls for it or how much time has passed; sequels are in now.
This one controversial film from 2004, however, has been deemed one of the 'most disturbing films' people have ever watched.
But in that same breath, they have also called the flick an 'awesome must watch.' Admittedly not two adjectives that go together when describing a film, disturbing and awesome, but here we are.
The film in question? The Mel Gibson directed, The Passion of Christ.

That’s right, Jesus is back, and the sequel is set to start filming in 2025. The film is aptly named The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, although personally, I would have gone with 2 Jesus 2 Christ - but resurrection is certainly fitting.
The sequel has seemingly been in the works for a while as Gibson spoke about it in a 2022 interview and explained what people could expect for the religious epic.
He described the film as a non-linear narrative set ‘in the past and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.’
The script has reportedly undergone multiple drafts and revisions and one of the writers of the original film, Randall Wallace, has been undertaking them.

In April this year, Wallace confirmed that the screenplay had finally been completed.
Most recently, according to Italian news agency Italpress, Mel Gibson is currently in Malta and is scouting potential filming locations with a production team.
In addition to this, Jim Caviezel is set to return to his role as Jesus.
On Reddit threads, as you can imagine, there are a slew of sequel related jokes but many are questioning why there is going to be a sequel in the first place.

“I admit I never saw this film despite it being An Event at my catholic grade school, but um, how do you sequel the New Testament?,”one person commented.
“The movie absolutely nobody asked for,” another wrote with another replying that some people did pray for it.
“Guess they’re trying to take back the highest grossing Rated R film title away from Deadpool and Wolverine,” another commented.

While critics regarded the film as a mixed bag upon its release, it did earn $600 million at the box office. On Rotten Tomatoes, viewers were rather positive towards it giving it a score of 80 percent.
