Harry Potter fans have been left in tears over a documentary on the murder of one of its cast members, Rob Knox.

The movie star, who was just 18, was stabbed to death in 2008.

Rob had just wrapped filming on the sixth instalment of the fantasy series, Half Blood Prince, and was set to appear in the final Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows.

This is despite his character, Marcus Belby, not appearing in the seventh book written by J. K. Rowling.

The film was his breakout role, though he previously had appeared in police drama The Bill, BBC comedy After You’re Gone, and Channel 4's reality show Trust Me, I’m a Teenager.

He was killed while on a night out in Sidcup, London, after trying to defend his younger brother, 17-year-old Jamie, during a fight.

Rob Knox was stabbed to death at just 18.

Last year, British broadcaster ITV released a documentary titled (K)nox: The Rob Knox Story, which looked at Rob's life and untimely death.

Some of those to appear in the factual film include his Harry Potter co-stars Tom Felton and Jim Broadbent.

Viewers took to social media to share how heartbreaking they'd found the documentary.

One person penned: “Cried all the way through. So so so sad. RIP Rob.”

“Doesn’t matter how many times I watch it… I am bawling my eyes out every time," said another.

A third wrote: "That’s so sad… I didn’t know he was dead."

Rob was set to star in the Deathly Hallows.

"What a loss very sad," said a fourth.

After he died, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were among those to pay tribute to Rob.

Daniel, who played the title character in the franchise, penned: “Dear Rob, We are all proud to have known you and devastated to have lost you.

"It is terrible just to write this note. Rest in peace, Dan xxx.”

He added a quote from the author D.H. Lawrence, which read: “To anyone who reads this remember ‘The dead don’t die. They look on and help'.”

Meanwhile, Rupert wrote: “Rob, It was an honor to have known you and whenever I’m on the Southend strip I’ll be thinking of you. Rest in peace mate.”

Rob's killer was found guilty on four counts of wounding and was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison before he can be considered for parole.

He was also handed three concurrent life sentences for wounding friends of the actor.

The documentary on Rob's life and death is now available to stream on ITV.
