Tim Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012

Rocky Horror icon Tim Curry is set to make his film return after a 14-year hiatus.

The 78-year-old, best known for his roles in the likes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and It, suffered a major stroke that left him wheelchair-bound in 2012.

He underwent countless rounds of physical and speech therapy, which over time has helped him get his life back on track.

This allowed Curry to begin work with voice acting, working several voice acting projects for Cartoon Network and appearing in the FOX Television Event The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do The Time Warp Again.

Following the terrifying experience, Curry received the organization's lifetime achievement award.

"I’m doing well and I’m looking forward to it," he told Los Angeles magazine before the party. "I’ve done a few benefits for the Actors Fund and I think it’s a marvellous organisation. I hope not to have to use it."

The actor went on to say having a sense of humour during his recovery was 'absolutely vital'.

"It’s not tough to maintain," he told the magazine. "It is just part of my DNA."

On his award, Curry added: "It means that it just sort of solidifies the kind of work the American acting community has given me for years now.

"I was thrilled when they told me and I am thrilled now."

The veteran actor is now making his return to the big screen with Stream, which opened in select theatres on Wednesday.

The movie - which follows a family who's weekend getaway turns deadly thanks to four deranged killers who play a sadistic game by locking down their hotel and hunting them down - marks Curry's first feature film role since the 2010 comedy Burke and Hare.

Michael Leavy, the director of Stream, has been speaking about Curry's involvement in the film and it's fair to say he's pretty delighted.

"This has been a really hard secret to keep and contain our excitement, especially for this long," the director said in a statement.

"We are so happy and thrilled to bring Tim back to the movies and back to the big screen!

"His charm always radiates and shines through everything he does and we are so honored to have him a part of Stream!

"He is someone I have idolized personally growing up and it is one of the major highlights of my life getting to work with him, especially on a project that means so much to me."

Levy added: "We can’t wait for fans to sit back and enjoy our movie in theaters and hopefully with a huge crowd having a blast together!

"This is the way horror films are meant to be seen and enjoyed. Stream is here to entertain."
