Kate Winslet shares huge secret about iconic kiss scene with Leonardo DiCaprio

Kate Winslet shares huge secret about iconic kiss scene with Leonardo DiCaprio

Kate Winslet said shooting the famous Titanic kissing scene with Leonardo DiCaprio was a 'nightmare'

Kate Winslet has shared a surprising secret fans 'wouldn't know' about the most iconic scene of her career, which saw her lock lips with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic.

Perhaps even one of the most iconic scenes in the whole of film sees Jack (DiCaprio) standing at the front of the Titanic, as Rose (Winslet) comes to join him.

The pair look out into the horizon, before bringing their arms up together, lacing fingers and going in for a smooch.

While the scene appears very romantic on our TV screens, the moment wasn't as intimate as we all think.

Obstacles arose in filming the iconic scene, something the actor notes many fans 'wouldn't know' about.

But thankfully, Winslet revealed all in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, in which she watched back the iconic moment from the 1997 release.

"Now this was a nightmare shooting this, because Leo couldn't stop laughing and we had to re-shoot this about four times because the light, the light was - Jim [director James Cameron] wanted a very specific light for this, obviously, and the sunsets kept changing where we were," she said.

"This was a section of the ship, it wasn't part of the actual whole ship set that we had, it was a little sort of sawn off bit. We had to climb up a ladder to get to that, I remember, hair and make-up couldn't reach us."

She explained that despite DiCaprio 'looking completely natural' in the scene, he actually 'had to lie on sun beds' and there was 'a lot of fake tan make-up going on'.

So, within her costume, Winslet had DiCaprio's makeup, 'brushes and sponge' alongside her own make-up brushes and sponge in the other side, the actor taking on the role of make-up artist too in-between takes.

Winslet actually ended up covered in DiCaprio's fake tan after the kissing scene, recalling: "I would end up looking like I had been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me, and he just looked like there was a bit missing from his face."

She also remembered she couldn't breathe properly in her costume as her 'boobs are practically up to [her] chin'.

Winslet however does 'feel very proud' of the scene and the movie in general because it's a 'film that just keeps giving,' finding it 'extraordinary' how whole generations are 'discovering' the movie for 'the first time'.
