While we’re a long way off until Squid Game season two sees the light of day, the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has ideas for what he’d like to go down, including the return of one of our favourite characters.
The first season of the dark K-drama, which sees 456 people on the brink of financial ruin compete in a series of blood-thirsty games in a remote island warehouse to win a huge cash prize, was an absolute hit when it dropped on Netflix in September 2021.
Given Squid Game’s record-breaking success, not to mention its cliffhanger ending, it’s no surprise that creator Hwang is planning a second run, having confirmed the news back in November last year.

While it’s very much in the brainstorming stage, Hwang has some ideas for the survival drama, one of which he hinted at when speaking to Deadline on the red carpet at Saturday’s (March 19) PGA Awards ceremony.
"There will be more great games, that’s all I can say," he explained. "I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet."
One of the most significant question marks hanging over season two is whether any of our favourite characters will return, given most of them died (in brutal fashion) in the first run.

When asked whether this will happen through flashbacks or other means, Hwang joked: "No, because most of them are dead. I’ll try something to bring them back to Season 2."
However, he did gesture to HoYeon Jung, who played Kang Sae-byeok and became the most-followed Korean actress on Instagram following her success on the show, suggesting that she may return in a totally different form.
"Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see," said Hwang, before HoYeon quipped: "I could change my hair color. Let’s do a little like plastic surgery."

Whether this will actually happen is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain: Squid Game was an astounding success, and will no doubt have millions of fans tuning in should it return for a second season.
The publication also quizzed Hwang over whether he was surprised by the positive reaction to the show, to which he said: "Yeah in a way because who can expect this kind of success. I tried hard to make a successful show, but I never expected this much success. It’s a surprise."
