Dave Filoni, executive producer on The Mandalorian, claims Star Wars creator George Lucas had reservations prior to introducing Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, to the universe.

The ridiculously cute Jedi first hit screens in November 2019 in the first season of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

However, while Baby Yoda has since gone on to became extremely popular, and featured on a multitude of merchandise, Lucas was initially said to be hesitant about the character.

In the book Star Wars: The Art of The Mandalorian, published on February 15, executive producer and creative director Dave Filoni reflected on past conversations he had with Lucas about the formation of Baby Yoda, Uproxx reports.

He said: 'I had a talk with George, at one point, about The Child, and his main concern was that the kid has to have a proper amount of training.'

However, thankfully Grogu does receive some training, by none other than Luke Skywalker, which is shown in Jon Favreau's 2021 series The Book of Boba Fett.

Today in Star Wars History: In 2022 - The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (S2) was published by @ABRAMSbooks!

The art book also explains reasons behind some of the costumes, such as those of the Imperial drivers.

'An early idea was that the Imperial drivers were wearing the same armor as the AT-AT commanders [from The Empire Strikes Back]. Ultimately, we decided to go with the tank troopers from Rogue One [a design chosen by George Lucas on a Rogue One pre-production set visit],' it notes.

The book also reflects on what makes the design for Star Wars so recognisable.

'So, what makes a strong Star Wars design? The guidelines established by George Lucas are simple: Design as if a child could draw it. Design for the silhouette. Design for the iconic logo. Keep it simple. Give it personality and make it believable.'

Lucas's concerns hadn't been put to bed in season one and two of The Mandalorian, instead they were allayed when the first season of The Book Of Boba Fett was released, which was a surprise to fans. The moment came in the sixth episode, when Grogu was seen to train with a young Luke Skywalker, before leaving and returning to the side of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).

Season three of The Mandalorian has been announced but a date has not yet been released for its premiere.
