A 2007 film has been praised for having one of the most 'devastating' twist endings viewers have ever witnessed.
And with such a brutally devastating ending, it won't come as a surprise to learn that the movie is based on a story by none other than Stephen King (of course!).
It hardly needs saying, but there are some major spoilers ahead.
Based on King's 1980 novella, The Mist tells the terrifying story of a small town that suddenly finds itself engulfed in an eerie mist that holds more than what at first meets the eye.

Mirroring King's novel, the movie sees main character David - played by Thomas Jane - and his eight-year-old son Billy become trapped in a supermarket when a thick and heavy mist suddenly spreads across the town.
Chaos soon ensues when people realise the mist contains unseen forces that soon start brutally massacring anyone who is brave enough to venture in - something that worries David after he left his wife Stephanie at home when he and Billy went to the supermarket.
When never-before-seen creatures then emerge from the mist and begin breaking their way into the supermarket, David, Billy and a few other locals flee to a car in the hopes of escaping with their lives.
As the days go on, the town falls apart before our eyes, seeing the mass destruction and devastation caused by the mist and its contents - including the death of David's wife Stephanie.

Seeing his wife's body, their family home in ruin and no means of escape, David and the three other adults who were able to escape with him and his son decide to end their own lives.
Aiding their suicide, David shoots Billy and the other three survivors with the four remaining bullets in his gun, before he leaves the car distraught and gives himself up to the forces of the mist.
Well, just when we thought things couldn't get any more devastating, they well and truly do.

As David is ready to embrace death, the mist suddenly dissipates, revealing a vanguard of a US Army armored column who have began the process of exterminating the creatures and finally restoring order.
Followed by the army is a truck full of survivors - one of whom David met in the supermarket earlier in the film.
Realizing he has just taken the life of his own son and fellow survivors when they had a chance of life, the movie ends seeing David drop to his knees and screaming out in despair.

Absolutely brutal.
People just discovering the 2007 movie have been flooding to social media to express their anguish over the devastating ending.
"The guts to end a movie like this. I probably wouldn’t remember this movie if it wasn’t for the way it ended," one said.
Another said: "Imagine doing that to your whole family seconds before Calvary arrived to save you omg," while one concluded: "F**ked up ending but it's what made the movie."
