Rainn Wilson, star of the US version of The Office, has revealed that he was 'mostly unhappy' while filming the hugely successful sitcom.

While celebrities often look like they are living the high life, the majority of us never know what is going on behind closed doors.

Many would suspect that working on such as high-profile project would make anyone feel on top of the world, but that is certainly not always the case.

This was particularly the case for Rainn Wilson as she starred in The Office as Dwight Schrute.

Much like the original BBC's The Office by Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, the US version followed the employees of a company in an American town, with the first episode airing on NBC in 2005, before the final episode showing in 2013.

For the most part, the US adaptation of The Office was loved by fans, with its nine season sitting at a rather impressive 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite it being a fan favourite, Rainn admits he did not enjoy being part of the cast and the show in general, for the most part.

Speaking on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Rainn said: "When I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough.

"I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough."

The actor then reflected on all the A-listers he has had the chance to work with, but that still wasn't enough.

He added: "This is what I’m looking at now and realising now: I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money working with, like, Steve Carell and Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig.

"I’m on one of the great TV shows. People love it. I wasn’t enjoying it."

The 57-year-old also discussed being more focused on what he hadn't achieved rather than the success he was achieving in the likes of The Office.

"I was thinking about, 'Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell? How come I can’t have a movie career? Why don’t I have this development deal?'' Rainn added.

Nowadays, Rainn does seem more content with his role in The Office, recently opening up about the 'beautiful' moment he was sat next to a fan binging the show on a flight.
