The statement explained: "It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith.

"Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history.

"It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives."

The band explained that they have always wanted to 'blow [fans' minds] when performing' which is why they have made the tough decision to retire from touring.

"As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury," the statement continued.

"We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision - as a band of brothers - to retire from the touring stage."

The band went on to thank their team as well as the 'best fans on planet Earth', urging them to 'play our music loud, now and always'.

They explained that anyone who had purchased tickets would be due a refund.

The band - also consisting of Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joe Perry - were due to play 40 dates across the US in September.

Tyler's daughter, Mia Tyler, previously spoke about his injury back in February.

She told PEOPLE: "He's not supposed to be talking sometimes, so I have to literally yell at him and be like, 'You can't be on the phone with me right now, let's just text'."

She joked: "You can't shut him up – he can't close that mouth."

Fans have been left gutted by the decision, with one commenting on the post: "This is heartbreaking. Thanks for all the music and all the experiences. Aerosmith forever."

While another said: "Hey guys, thank's for decades and decades of happiness, great moments and excellent music, you are unique and thank you for being crazy and Dream on."
