Everybody has that one song that gets them racing over to the dance floor.

From birthday parties to club nights, there are some tunes that are simply irresistible.

The likes of Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' and The Bee Gees' 'You Should Be Dancing' are bonafide crowd pleasers.

But for us 90s kids, one banger that's withstood the test of time is Los Del Rio and Bayside Boys' 'Macarena.'

The 1993 hit's catchy beat and universally-known dance routine makes it the ultimate party anthem.

It's timeless and has soundtracked our lives, from school dances to bachelor parties and even weddings receptions.

But before you get too nostalgic, have you ever thought about what the lyrics to 'Macarena' are actually about?

The original Los Del Rio version of Macarena provides an even darker insight.

Curious music fans have claimed their childhoods are ruined after finding out for themselves.

The Macarena we all know and love is actually a remix of the original, which was performed solely by Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz Perdigones of Los Del Rio.

The remix is by Bayside Boys and features Colombian-American singer Carla Vanessa who sings the verses predominantly in English.

But clearly we haven't paid close enough attention to the lyrics.

Turns out 'Macarena' is actually pretty racy; it's about a young woman who has a threesome with her boyfriend's two best friends while he's out of town.

Listening to the song once more, it all adds up. The verse explains: "But don't you worry about my boyfriend / He's a boy whose name is Vitorino / I don't want him / Couldn't stand him / He was no good so I (hahahaha) / Now, come on, what was I supposed to do? / He was out of town and his two friends were so fine."

But in Los Del Rio's version, poor Vitorino's predicament is even more brutal.

He's out of town - because he's been drafted into the army.

The original Spanish verses translate as: "Macarena has a boyfriend who's called/ Who's called Vitorino by his last name

"And when he left to sign up for the army, he/Saw her with two of his friends".

And not even Vitorino's two friends are enough for Macarena, who still has wandering eyes. The song later explains: "Macarena dreams of El Corte Inglés [a shopping mall]/ And she buys all the latest fashion

"She would like to live in New York/And hook up with a new boyfriend".

Fans have been shocked to uncover the truth behind the not-so family-friendly song. Posting to TikTok, one person wrote: "I'm shook. I was today years old when I found out the Macarena is about a woman who cheats on her boyfriend with his two best friends. Childhood ruined." A second laughed: "and we danced to this at school?!" as a third echoed: "I had noooo right dancing to this when I was little". (sic).
