A huge 60-person brawl aboard a cruise ship was sparked by allegations of a threesome, according to an eyewitness who had seen the drama unfurl.

The Carnival Magic cruise ship was headed to New York City on Tuesday, 28 June, when a fight broke out among passengers at around 5.20am.

Theresa James, a travel agent, told Fox News that the fight started just before 2:00am on the ship’s fifth floor, where the on-board dance club and casino are.

She said it lasted for about an hour and involved an estimated 60 people, although the altercation wasn’t physical for the whole duration.

According to James, who claims she witnessed the fight from her door, an alleged threesome between passengers had upset their significant others when they learned about the intimate gathering.

James said the scrap saw beer bottles smashed, and that one woman may have been cut amid the chaos.

However, she praised Carnival and the cruise’s security team for stepping in to bring things under control, saying the situation may have been much worse had it not been for security - describing the guests involved as ‘ignorant fools acting stupid’.

The ship had left its New York City-New Jersey hub on 20 June, making stops in Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas before making its way back.

It eventually arrived in Manhattan as scheduled, with officers from New York Police Department waiting as it docked after being notified of the disruption.

According to Complex, while the Coast Guard and NYPD were informed about the incident, police said no law enforcement boarded the ship, while no injuries were reported and no weapons were involved.

Carnival also confirmed there were ‘no serious injuries’ in the incident, and that security staff had been able to intervene.

In a statement earlier this week, the cruise line said: “Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub. Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervene.

“The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and shoreside law enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”
