Anne Heche is in a coma following her car crash

Anne Heche is in a coma following a car crash in Los Angeles and remains in an ‘extreme critical condition’. 

Giving an update on the 53-year-old's condition, a representative for Heche said: “At this time Anne is in extreme critical condition. She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention. She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”

The rep had previously said Heche was ‘currently in stable condition,’ and added: “Her family and friends ask for your thoughts and prayers. We also ask to respect her privacy during this difficult time. Thank you.”

Heche was rushed to hospital after she crashed her car into a house on Friday, 5 August.

Authorities believe her car potentially hit a kerb and was two feet off the ground before it smashed into the house. 

A neighbour of the person whose house Heche hit, Lynne Mishele, has spoken out about the crash and claimed Mishele was ‘was extremely fortunate’ to survive the accident with no injuries, along with her dogs and turtle, as she was fortunately in another section of her property.

Lynne Bernstein added that the tenant ‘was in shock’, telling PEOPLE: “I don’t think she got what was going on. She said, ‘What happened? What happened?’”

The neighbour also claimed Heche’s car went ‘almost all the way through’ the house and ‘almost immediately’ caught fire.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told PEOPLE the accident caused 'structural compromise' to the property.

Another eyewitness told NBCLA: "The house was tons of smoke. I think they used the crane to move the car to extract the driver. It was crazy."

Following the crash, Heche’s ex-boyfriend Thomas Jane told the Daily Mail that the actress is 'stable' and 'expected to pull through'.

Heche is known for her roles in films including Psycho, Six Days, Seven Nights, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Donnie Brasco and Cedar Rapids as well as TV roles in medical drama Nip/Tuck.

She is also known for her role on the soap opera Another World, for which she won a Daytime Emmy in 1991.

The star notably dated Ellen DeGeneres between 1997 and 2000.
