The bodybuilding world is in mourning at the loss of a young and rising star.

Bodybuilder and former Mr Olympia competitor Neil Currey has died at 34.

The tragic news was revealed by Milos Sarcev, Currey’s former trainer, who penned a devastated note on Instagram.

"Absolutely shocking, heartbreaking news - that my former athlete @neil_currey died today," he said.

"My last/best memory of him was this smiling face after he won New York Pro and fulfilled his lifetime dream of qualifying for the Mr. Olympia.

"I am lost for words and filled with pain and sadness.

"My sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. RIP Neil and God bless your soul."

There has been no indication what caused the young man to die.

The UK-born bodybuilder had his first professional competition in 2017 at the WBFF World Championships Pro Muscle Model.

Two years later, he made his International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation debut in the Classic Physique competition.

He finished seventh in that event and it spurred him on to best the result.

His best appearance was last year at the New York Pro where he came first in the Men's Classic Physique.

The win qualified him for the famed Mr Olympia competition, where he ended up coming 16th.

Generation Iron says Neil was inspired by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Flex Wheeler, and Phil Heath.

There has been an outpouring of sadness after news of his death was shared on social media.

One fan said: "I lived with him for two years, and my heart is filled with sorrow for Neil. He possessed an unwavering stoicism that I admired greatly. Neil, in the time you spent on this earth, you accomplished more than most could in three lifetimes. Your unwavering dedication to pursuing your dreams and your refusal to surrender were awe-inspiring."

Female IFBB Pro bodybuilder Iris Kyle wrote: "My condolences to the Curry family and the sports world for the loss of a great athlete. May the earth bless his resting place and may we remember him for his positive impact, leaving negative assumptions behind."

American ex-bodybuilder Dave Palumbo added: "Stunned and beyond saddened by the tragic news that Neil Currey has passed away at the young age of 34. We pass our most sincere and deepest condolences to Neil's family, friends, and to all of his fans around the world."
