Catholic priest launches into scathing attack about The Project in the wake of Jesus joke scandal

The 'joke that broke Australia' still has some reeling nearly a week on.

A Catholic priest has aimed a fiery attack at the Australian current affairs show The Project after the program aired a brutal sex joke about Jesus Christ.

Father Brendan Lee used his Sunday homily at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Bondi in Sydney's ritzy eastern suburbs to attack the Channel Ten program after it aired the X-rated gag, told by comedian Reuben Kaye.

He said during his sermon he wanted to see the show taken off air in the wake of the X-rated scandal involving the Son of God.

"It is a show that preaches diversity and tolerance but has no tolerance itself for different religions and people of faith," he told the congregation, according to the Daily Telegraph.

"It does not practice what it preaches."

"It is hate speech and bigotry."

The same could also apply to a certain religion that tells its followers to 'love thy neighbour' while also persecuting the LGBTQI+ community as hypocritical as well, but that doesn't seem to count.

Anywho, Father lee went on to tell news.com.au that leaders in the media and politics need to take a stand against horrific jokes such as the one told on The Project.

"It was just so offensive,” he said.

"Jesus Christ is the son of God. You couldn’t mock something more sacred. He is our everything. To knock Jesus Christ is to knock Christianity."He also claimed the comments reflect a sustained attack against Christianity.

He added: "These things escalate and if Christians don’t push back it will get worse."

Hosts of The Project Waleed Aly and Sarah Harris have since apologised to Ten's viewers after Kaye's X-rated Jesus joke promoted outrage and pearl-clutching across Australia.

So, if you're a fan of the Big Man Upstairs or his kid, maybe don't read on.

Or see it right here.

Kaye, who appeared on the show to promote Sydney's Mardi Gras and World Pride, went in for the kill, and, let's just say, even Jesus isn't rising from this brutal slaying.

"I love Jesus," Kaye said to hosts Waleed Aly and Sarah Harris.

"I love any man who can get nailed for three days straight and come back for more."

Kaye's joke came just after he had finished explaining how he still cops abuse from religious zealots.

But the comedian doesn't care about the backlash because he's taken to social media to share the multiple stories about happy clappers losing their hive minds about the Lord, with a simple comment alongside it: "Some heroes don’t wear capes. They wear lashes."
