The alleged attack took place around 10am on March 24. Fortunately Arielle survived the ordeal, but has been left with injuries.
The couple have been married for six years, but reportedly their relationship had been falling apart in the months leading up to Gerhadt's alleged attack on Arielle.
According to a court filing in Arielle's bid for a restraining order against Gerhadt, she claims he called his adult son after the altercation and admitted that he'd 'tried to kill' her but she 'got away', the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Gerhadt has since been charged with second-degree attempted murder and his bail has been set at $5 million.

As per the restraining order filing, Arielle claims the aesthesiologist was prone to 'extremely jealousy' and had attempted to 'control and monitor' her communications.
In December, Arielle says her husband had accused her of cheating on him.

An affidavit seen by PEOPLE detailed the apparent events that unfolded on March 24.
Gerhadt is said to have asked to take a selfie with Arielle on the tourist spot edge, but she said that she didn't feel comfortable standing there so declined and started to walk back.

Her husband then allegedly 'yelled at her to come back, and when she refused, he pushed her into the bushes where they began to struggle'.

According to Arielle, it's then that her husband-of-six-years struck her with a rock and smashed her face into the ground.
She shouted for help and was able to get away from Gerhadt by crawling over to two fellow hikers. Arielle told them that her husband was 'trying to kill [her]'.
Later the same day, Gerhadt was taken into custody.
