When an investigation into her death was launched by police, her boyfriend, Diego Fonseca Borges, claimed Ielly had lost her life after being shot by a group of armed men.
Borges alleged he'd been driving with Ielly, and that the men had been trying to mug them when the shooting took place.
He then rushed her to hospital, making it appear to doctors that Borges was doing what he could to try and save Ielly from the armed men.

Speaking to Globo News at the time, local police chief Ulisses Cortez said: "He even hugged [Ielly's] body and promised her mother that he would find the men responsible for her killing and make him pay."
However, when police began to notice several inconsistencies in Borges' story, they began to investigate further.
According to Globo, Borges was unable to explain exactly where the alleged shooting took place or exactly what happened. Experts also realized the bullet entry hole on Ielly's body did not match his version of events.
As the investigation continued, Ielly's aunt turned her phone over to the police and they discovered a video which had been filmed on Ielly's phone.

The video was filmed at a house in the Goiás region, about 100 miles from Brasilia, and showed Borges watching through a window while having a conversation with Ielly, who was behind the camera.
A few minutes later, Borges pointed a gun in Ielly's direction and held it towards her for a few moments as she laughed.

Borges then pulled the trigger, striking Ielly and causing the phone to fall to the ground.
Borges was charged with qualified homicide, though he argued he'd thought the gun was out of ammunition.
As the investigation continued, police learned the couple had allegedly had a 'troubled relationship', and that Ielly had opened up to her friends about alleged violence she'd suffered from Borges.
"They advised her to end it,” one of the officers told Globo.

Ielly's mother, Olesiane Alves da Silva, added that Ielly hadn't wanted to see Borges any more, but that he 'wanted to talk to her' on the day the shooting took place.
"She even heated up a plate of food for him here at home [before they left]. She said: mom, I'm going over there and I'll be right back," she said.
UNILAD has contacted Brazil police for updates on the case.
