Stranger Things fans reckon Vecna’s been lurking since season one of the hit Netflix show, and their theories are pretty convincing.
Anyone who watched the recently-released fourth season of the show will no doubt still have the eerie chime of a grandfather clock ringing in their ears, a sinister sound that signalled Vecna was about to strike and someone’s eyeballs were about to pop out of their skull.
Diehard fans of the show have started pointing out that the chime – now associated with Vecna – has actually been used in previous seasons, suggesting the nightmarish character has been around this whole time.

Watch one of their theories below:
One eagle-eared TikToker realised the sound of a chiming clock can actually be heard in the very first episode of Stranger Things.
That’s right, when Will’s biking home from Mike’s house in the opening episode of season one, we hear a clock chime around the time he spots a Demogorgon’s shadow.

Sharing the clip on social media, TikTok user @mark..byers wrote: “The first time we heard the clock,” and his followers were quick to jump on the clip.
One person wrote: “It’s been there all along WHAT.” A second added: “It all makes sense now.”
A third TikToker penned: “WHAT! OMG!”, while a fourth noted: “This is mind blowing how he’s been there since the beginning.”

What’s more, another TikToker, @4thgenyeonjunie, noticed that the chiming of a clock can also be heard in season three, when Billy is possessed by the Mind Flayer.
Once again, fans were gobsmacked, with one writing: “WOWWW!”
“OH MY GOD!” exclaimed another person, while a third wrote: “These writers are geniuses.”
However, it’s worth noting that in a recent interview with the The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s sound designer Craig Henighan admitted he ‘didn’t know the clock was going to be such a storyline’.

Chris explained: “I actually used the chime, and I didn’t really know this until I thought about it.
“I still remember Shawn [Levy, director and executive producer] listening to it and being like, ‘Is that a clock? Why do we have a clock in there?’”
Chris added: “But Matt and Ross really liked it and we just went with it. At that time, I didn’t know the clock we have in season four was going to be such a storyline.”
