People are only just realizing the mysterious reason why Domino's logo has three dots

The 'original plan' for Domino's logo didn't quite go to plan

We all recognize the iconic Domino's three-dot logo, but do we know the meaning behind the design?

Unless you're a die-hard Pizza Hut fan, then it's more than likely you'll have ended up with a fair few boxes printed with a domino sign littered over your bedroom floor after a particularly heavy night out.

The history of Domino's

Domino's story first began in 1960 with brothers Tom and James Monaghan when the pair opened the first store, known as 'DomniNick' in Michigan, USA.

A year later the name was changed to Domino's Pizza after Tom bought out James' share of the store and the logo design was put into action.

However, the original idea for the three dots and what they'd represent didn't work out exactly as anticipated.

The Domino's logo design

Domino's website explains: "The three dots on our logo represent the three stores that Tom originally planned to open."

However, the three stores turned into many more.

Former group CEO and and managing director of Domino's Pizza Enterprises, Don Meij, took to Facebook in January 2021 to reveal 'one question' he gets 'asked a lot' about the company.

The post reads: "One question I get asked a lot is, ‘What does the Domino’s logo mean?’"

He revealed the 'famous dots actually represent the first three stores opened by Domino’s founder Tom Monaghan in the 1960s'.

Meij explains: "The original plan was to add one new dot for each new store, but that idea didn’t last long as more and more dots rapidly joined the Domino’s family.

"Those three dots have now grown to more than 17,000 around the globe!"

And as of 2023, there are actually now over 20,900 stores across the globe.

And it's not taken long for people to flock to the post to weigh in.

One social media user commented: "Huh...come full circle to the original logo basically."

"I thought it represented how many pieces of pepperoni on two pizza's..." another joked.

A third wrote: "Current logo is a good one, scales to any size and is instantly recognisable even if it didn't say Domino's you'd still know it was for the brand."

"Has someone tried to design a Domino's logo with 17,000 dots on it just for fun?" A fourth questioned.

And a fifth said: "Do the three dots represent how good the pizzas are out of five."

Touché.
