Oreo has teased that there's a big change coming to the iconic cookie.

Released in 1912, the small, round snacks became a staple of American cuisine and went on to spread to the international market.

The classic cookie is favorite in many households, but Oreo have since released an array of different flavorings. From peanut butter and red velvet, to mint and 'golden Oreos' — you name it, the company has probably tried it.

In fact, Oreo is so well loved that the firm has even threatened to create its own doomsday vault in a bid to protect the recipe if the worst should happen.

Now it seems if the cookie company has answered people's calls to make a major change to Oreos — by making them square instead of round.

Oreo UK and Ireland teased the dramatic adjustment on its TikTok yesterday (January 17) in a video showcasing a square-shaped Oreo prototype, while sharing a series of people's comments asking for them to take such shape.

The clip was captioned: "Don’t mind me, just testing my SHAPE shifting skills."

While it seems some people wanted the cookies to change shape, others in the comments section of the video aren't as convinced.

One person said of Oreo's TikTok: "Umh what have I just watched..."

"Why is everything turning square," another wrote, while tagging Doritos following its recent announcement.

Someone else echoed: "Bro why is Doritos doing this too."

"Please tell me it's a joke," a different person wrote.

Some people may have raised questions, but a lot of Oreo fans shared their excitement of the idea of a square cookie.

"Oreo... YOU SHOULD RELEASE THIS AS A LIMITED EDITION!! I would actually buy this," an Oreo fan penned.

"Please make square Oreos a thing," begged another.

A third added: "They look better in my opinion lol."

An Oreo spokesperson has since addressed the apparent change that's set to take place.

They said: "We love playfulness here at OREO so why not play with our iconic shape? We look forward to our fans seeing OREO from a new angle.

"We can’t reveal more just yet, but plans are taking shape. Snacking fans should keep their eyes peeled for more and we’ll be sure to circle back on the mystery soon."

While square-shaped Oreos may be actually happening, the brand has said that they will not be available for purchase.

Nothing has been confirmed by Oreo (yet), but other social media posts have hinted at what could be a potential Minecraft collaboration ahead of the A Minecraft Movie hitting theaters later this year; hence the square cookie shape.

I guess only time will tell...
